Radiologic Evaluation of Herniated Lumbar Disc

Abstract

|
200 cases operated upon under the diagnosis of herniated lumbar disc was evaluated. In respect of radiologic examination. The results were as follow. 1. The plain L-S spine X-ray showed pathologic findings in 162 cases (81%). Among these cases, 124 cases (62%) were compatible with operative lesions. 2. Lumbar myelography showed accurate pre-op diagnosis in 165 cases (82.5%). 3. 35 cases showed discrepancy between myelographic findings and operative lesion. They consisted with 20 cases of level discrepancy, 8 cases of false positive and 7 cases of false negative. 4. The cases using water soluble contrast media showed higher diagnostic accuracy. 5. The lesions between L4-5 were apt to be false positive while those between L5-S1 showed high incidence of false negative.
